NZTP will be the only facility of its kind in New Zealand to be recognised as a true Technology Park.

Internationally, there are over 700 science and technology parks, and more are being developed rapidly. A Technology Park includes some emphasis on all the following factors*:

Technology transfer opportunities

Incubation for start-up businesses
Support for business at the grown-on stage
Suitable environment for larger and international businesses
Formal and operational links with centres of research and knowledge creation

Four New Zealand tertiary institutions have been working steadily with Frankham Buildings to provide a facility to connect with business to provide a practical means of commercialising their technology; AUT, Lincoln University, Unitec New Zealand and Waikato University.

The model chosen and studied has been the successful commercialisation hub across the Tasman, Australia Technology Park Innovations Pty Ltd. ATP Innovations is owned by four of Australia's leading Universities; The Australian National University, The University of Sydney, The University of New South Wales and the University of Technology Sydney.

NZTP has set aside 20% of the site for the New Zealand equivalent of ATPInnovations, and government has been engaged to assist with funding on the same basis as that enjoyed by the Universities in NSW.

Frankham Buildings is responsible for the development of New Zealand Technology Park, from inception to project completion and management. Jim Frankham is the Managing Director, and has been the catalyst for the collaboration of universities, government and business people to better commercialise technology.

Frankham Buildings is run by A.G. Frankham Ltd, a family-owned company that has been in business since 1920. Fourth generation family members are involved with the running of the business, primarily with a marketing and high technology input. The company has been located in Penrose for nearly 30 years and knows the area well.
